Other alliaceae family members are :
Garlic (Allium sativum)
Leek (Allium ampeloprasum)
Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum)
Shallot (Allium cepa)
Planting Method
Onions can be established one of three ways: direct seeding, sets and transplants. Direct seeding gives excellent results where the season is sufficiently long enough to provide the early pre-bulbing growth needed before bolting.
The use of sets and transplants ensure large bulb sizes and uniform maturity dates. Sets are small dry bulbs that are produced in the previous season by overseeding and growing under conditions that promote rapid bulbing.
Seed treatment
Sets and transplants can be immersed in Topsin and Penncozeb for 15 minutes and left to dry partially before planting.
Nursery
To prevent damping off, it is recommended to spray the nursery with a spray of Ridomil MZ 68 + Topsin and Dursban or Karate Zeon against ants
Weeds
Weeds can severely hinder the development of plants specially during the first weeks of their growth.
General land preparation
Use Touchdown Forte Hitech for a general weed treatment at least 3 weeks before plantation.
Pre emergent treatment
Ronstar can be applied as a spray on the soil after planting of onion before weed emergence
Post emergent treatment
Fusilade Super can be sprayed over the cucurbitaea plants to control annual and seedling perennial grasses.Fusilade Super is also used to kill sugar cane.
Foliar Fertilizers
The complete foliar fertilisers Mairol and Hortal will improve the condition of the plants thereby increasing the yield.
During vegetative growth use Mairol and during flowering and fruiting use Hortal. Diseases affecting Onion / GarlicPurple blotch Blast Rot Pink root rot
