Sugar Cane

Sugar cane (saccharum officinarum) has been known for 2200 years now and is currently grown in tropical and subtropical regions. It is a member of the gramineae family and is propagated by planting sections of the stem. Planting is carried out in furrows. In Mauritius, it was the Dutch who introduced sugar cane in 1598 and since that time sugar cane has been the most important crop of our economy. Sugar cane alone covers 70,000 hectares of our cultivated area.

General Land Preparation

Use Touchdown Forte Hitech for a general weed treatment at least 3 weeks before plantation.

Pre-emergent Treatment

Applied before weeds and cane emerge or before weed emerge and after cane have emerged.
