* Weeds
* *
  Weeds generally mean any unwanted plants, often growing wild, especially to the detriment of desired crops.

Weeds can be divided into three main groups :

a) Broad leaved weeds eg Botrice, Pourpier, Herbe de bouc.
b) Grasses eg chiendent, Meinki, Fataque.
c)Cyperacea e.g. herbe a oignon, herbe Mota.

Weeds can be controlled according to the timing of application as follows:

1)Pre-planting control
2)Pre-emergence of weeds
3)Post- emergence of weeds

Since it is very difficult to tackle specific weed , we will therefore put more emphasis on ways of weed control in Mauritius.

1. Pre-planting control

This treatment is generally for land cleaning prior to planting and insituations where weeds are present. A non-selective herbicide is used for that type of treatment.

Touchdown Forte Hitech is used for a general weed treatment at least 3 weeks before an area is required for plantation.

2. Pre-emergence of weeds

In this case weeds are controlled upon germination with the use of a selective residual herbicide. It may be applied either before crop emergence or after crop emergence. The herbicide to use should be carefully selected so as not to damage the crop.

A. Sugar cane

Applied before weeds and plant crop emerge or before weed emerge and after plant crop have emerged .

For sensitive cane varieties eg R570.

1) For the control of broad leaf weeds , use

  • Atrazine 500 SC
  • Gesaprim 90 WG

  • 2) For the control of seeds of grass weeds

  • Falcon gold 960 EC
  • Tebusan 500 SC

  • For tolerant cane varieties eg 3035

  • B. For tobacco and bulb crops eg onion, garlic, gladioli

  • Ronstar

  • 3. Post-emergence of weeds

    Weeds are controlled when they have already germinated. This is done using a selective herbicide depending on the type of weed to be controlled. For post emergent control, the herbicide is normally applied to the foliage.

    Post emergent control is the application of herbicide after emergence weeds
